Biden’s segregationist gaffe
Joe Biden’s campaign strategy thus far has been to portray himself as someone who can work with people whose views he does not share, i.e. Republicans. This middle ground centrist image is one that he hopes will be attractive to voters in a general election battle against Trump. Three problems with this strategy: first it is out of touch with the modern progressive part of the Democratic Party and with their voter base. Biden risks doing a Hillary (when in 2016 she gave her middle finger to progressives, ultimately losing to Trump). Just like in 2016, the corporate media are now doing what they can to help their corporate stooge. Unfortunately (as Barack Obama recognized) Biden (unlike Hillary) is not the sharpest pencil in the box. Second, it is disingenuous because Biden is just as conservative as the Republicans he claims to dislike - many Democrats and independents don’t want Biden to be reaching across the aisle to help the billionaire class (he has stated that if President, the billionaires’ life-style will not change). Third, the example he has used to demonstrate that he can work with people whose views he professes not to like in order to ‘get things done’ (what things?) is confused and unconvincing. Notwithstanding the defense of corporate cronies like John Lewis who knowingly disregard his disingenuousness (Lewis also lied about Hillary v Bernie re the civil rights march on Washington in the context of the 2016 Democratic primary ‘elections’) Biden gives the example of having worked with segregationist senators in the seventies. Biden had claimed that the senators in question never called him ‘boy’, instead calling him ‘son’. He cites this as an illustration of their being civil towards him. However, calling a white man boy would not have been derogatory in a racist way so no civility would have been shown in their using ‘son’ instead of ‘boy’. Furthermore, Biden had previously suggested that they called him ‘son’ because of the fact that he was unusually young for a senator at the time. Again, no civility is forthcoming but more importantly we see Biden changing his explanation for their use of ‘son’, from his being young (no appeal to civility) to their being civil (and not calling him ‘boy’). Train wreck. When criticized by Cory Booker who suggested Biden should apologize, Biden refused and claimed Booker (a black man) should apologize. Others such as Harris and Sanders agreed with Booker’s initial criticism and call for an apology. Biden claimed to not have a racist bone in his body, working ‘in civil rights’ his entire career (having lied about marching on Washington, supporting the Hyde amendment etc.) Biden might believe that he is not racist, but his belief is false. As a senator, Biden was known for traveling to DC from Delaware via train on Amtrak. Now, he is better known for his current campaign being a train wreck, the corporate media’s attempt to prevent it from being totally derailed notwithstanding.
